The Hayne Plane has literally soared out of the country as Jarryd Hayne has decided to leave his beloved Eels and attempt to make it in the NFL.
It’s a stunning move and while people have talked about trying to make the switch, he will be the first high profile NRL player to genuinely have a go.
Hayne is exceptionally strong, has brilliant vision, great hands and great footwork. Will he make it in what I believe is the greatest game in the world? My heart says he will make it, my head says it will be harder than trying to get into Roxy’s Night Club in Parramatta, on a Saturday night, if you aren’t wearing three stripes.
The obvious position for Hayne would be as a punt or kick returner. This would require the least number of new skills to learn.
The glamour positions of running back and wide receiver are going to be a far harder transition, but with a lot of dedication and hard work, there is no reason why Jarryd can’t turn into a wide receiver.
He is only giving himself 12 months to make it, which really only means between now and August next year, as the new season starts in September and trials take place in August. In the most risk adverse game in the world, no team would take a punt on a guy who has never played the game in his life, in an actual game.
He needs to learn the rules, how to carry a ball, how to run in new equipment, how to understand calls and run routes, how to block and how to adjust to cold- and I mean intense cold. Minus 20 degree cold.
He has all the attributes and skills to make it as an NFL player. If he had started about 18 years ago, he would be dominating the game.
If he can cross codes and make it, Hayne will become one of the most incredible sportsman, this country has ever produced.
He needs to work with Chip Kelly, who is a forward thinking coach or creative quarterbacks like Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick or Johnny Manziel.
He’s worn blue and gold all his life. What team in the NFL has colours of blue and yellow- the mighty San Diego Chargers!
